Bentley Williams – What is Real?

Philosophers like to start with fundamental questions. What is real, and how do we know it? On most commentary surrounding the Bachelorette, there is a lot of talk about Bentley being “cast” as the villain this season. This word, “cast” has always been interesting. Someone gets cast to play a part or role in a film or play. For example, there is the hero, the love interest, the sidekick, the clown, and, and of course the villain. Why is cast so interesting? Because it is inconsistent with the idea of “reality.” Being cast to play a role in real life is a contradiction, and a Reality TV Villain is an oxymoron. Kind of like Jumbo Shrimp, Army Intelligence, or Honest Politician. What many people do not realize of course about “reality” TV is that it is highly staged, planned, choreographed, and scripted. There are several reasons for this: (1) actual reality would be just too unwieldy involving too much uncertainty, (2) viewers supposedly want “heightened” real or drama (3) most of what people say is boring, and documentaries are really boring. What’s the evidence that the Bachelorette isn’t real? Well, how about the music that plays in the background each time you meet a character. Pleasant, cheerful music means we are supposed to like the character…err contestant…and root for him (J.P., Ben F.). Dark, foreboding music means we are supposed to dislike or distrust the contestant (really just Bentley this season), and silly music means that the contestant is the clown we are supposed to laugh at (the masked man, Drunk Tim, and to a lesser extent, William). The producers do the same thing with camera time comments and interactions with Ashley that they choose to show viewers. Here’s an excerpt from Reality Steve about Bentley:

“This show is supposed to find love for Ashley, and are supposed to cast guys that are wanting to be there for her and hopefully to fall in love, right? That’s the premise of the show. Sure, we know not every guy is REALLY there for that, but just the idea behind it is supposed to be legit. Well, they’ve known since the minute that Bentley stepped foot on the show, and hell probably even back to when they did his hometown video and the guy was talking about Emily, they knew he wasn’t into Ashley. He knew it and they knew it, yet they still cast him. It’s the shows fault, and Bentleys fault. Let’s say Bentley truly and honestly didn’t know that Ashley was the “Bachelorette” and the show lied to him the whole time telling him it was Emily (Remember, they started filming the night after Brad’s finale aired, so the latest he would’ve known for sure it was Ashley was the night before). So let’s say he didn’t watch “Jimmy Kimmel” the night before, and had no clue it was Ashley until he stepped out of the limo. Then why not just eliminate himself on the first night? Simple question that Chris Harrison, Mike Fleiss, ABC, Next Entertainment, and Warner Horizon will never answer: If Bentley never liked Ashley, why was he cast? They knew what they were doing the whole time because they know what the guy was saying about her in his ITM’s (In the Moment Interviews).”

In other words, Bentley’s on the show, so that the show will have a villain, so that it will be more interesting, so that you will watch it, so that it will get high ratings. The other contestants are just too plain vanilla to be able to pull off that role. So everyone needs to stop hating on Bentley. You may not like the role for which Bentley was cast, but that doesn’t mean you hate Bentley. That’s like saying you hate Anthony Hopkins for playing Hannibal Lecter. Plus, sexy villains like Bentley are way better than creepy villains.

Bentley, don’t you have anything better to do than try to justify what you did. You were mean… apologize.

This isn’t Bentley, but we are admirers. Plus, don’t you have anything better to do than read message boards…

Please people you all need to get a life instead of worrying about Bentley and what he does or does not do. There are so many idiots out there who believe this staged drama that is called “reality tv” is true and I feel sorry for all of them.

Well… since bentley can’t speak for himself.. [wink wink bentley far] no need to waste my time here anymore…

Admirer. How sad is that. I am not an admirer, but I keep waiting to see if Bentley has anything to say for himself, or if he has manned up to an apology for being mean. I don’t see how you can justify hurting someone for the sake of competition. Trying to justify that he was not as bad as previously bachelors so that makes him the good guy is beyond skewed. Also, based on the sites I have seen your rebuttals posted, it seems as if the pot is calling the kettle black. You seriously have nothing better to do than to defend the indefensible.

Anything to say? For WHAT? Being awesome? You need to apologize. Every single other Bachelor has slept with more then one woman days before dumping them. Are you really going to try and say that it’s on par with two dates with Bentley.

We want an apology from you! It’s an attitude like that that makes men never commit. Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free? Your attitude causes chagrin all over the world.

You have got to be kidding me. You actually think I was saying that sleeping with women then breaking up with them is okay? No I am not, and saying that Bentley is good because he is less bad doesn’t make him okay. Sorry to hear about your commitment problems that you blame on others by misinterpreting what they say. How’s that for an apology.

Well said apologists. Well said. A lot of people have the same characteristics of the “villain bentley”. But it’s easier to hate on someone else for their faults than looking at ourselves and seeing our own. Team bentley all the way!

I’m pretty sure bentley would be saying his side of the story if he was not under contract with abc. They pretty much own him for the next three years. Check back then if u want his side or an apology, unless you’re willing to pay him 5 million to pay abc for breaching his contract.

I don’t hate bentley, I don’t think he was the most charming, I was also hoping he’d leave the show sooner than later. I agree the show had part in this for ratings etc. I think if he was trying to promote his business it worked because I live in Utah, had never heard of the awesome looking trampoline place until after people talking about it due to the show. I plan to take my son there, it looks like a blast. Even if I didn’t like Bentley.

Looking back Bentley on the show made it more interesting to watch, and sadly at Ashley’s expense. He could have went about leaving better, and maybe downplayed his rude comments about her. It would’ve also been nice if Ashely didn’t put so much focus on one person, too.

I in an odd way… ended up liking Bentley.

Sash. I don’t know who you are but this is the most amazing response to the Bentley situation I’ve seen. The world would be a better place if there were more of you.. I think the Bentley Apologist group needs to have a spin off fan page in your honor..

Imagine Hannibal Lecter saying, “Quid pro quo Clarice. Tickle my pickle?”

Obviously, my post exposed the truth about the author or my comment and reply wouldn’t have been deleted:)

Nope. Don’t cuss, don’t post threats, talk about Bentley or the Bachelor and it will stay. Also, post something witty or make a sound argument (pro or against–no different to us). We filter out poorly written garbage from “anonymous” hatters (not sure which type of hater you are). In this last post, you sound like you posted something lame. But I’ll let it slide now that you know the rules.

Oh please, Bentley relished the role. He played up to the cameras with brutal honesty, so I had to laugh at how he wasn’t so brash when face to face with Ashley. In fact, he looked more like a sniveling little boy using part-time dad status as sympathy from her. Pretty pathetic!

Playing on someone’s insecurities and need for love isn’t hard, nor does it make you “the man.” It’s easy to put on an act when you don’t have to mean it. That’s not swagger. Anyone can do that. What a poser!

Take on a real challenge and become worthy of the love of someone worthwhile. This guy quit because he couldn’t go any farther with his charade. He was losing at his own twisted competition. Ashley was already picking several others over him. He knew it, so he made as dramatic an exit as he could before there was no emotion for him left to exploit. What a drama queen! Neither Emily nor Ashley would want anything to do with him in the end when it comes right down to it. He’s not even close to in the same league with them, looks or otherwise.

Plus the guy is related to Michelle from the last Bachelor but not in the way proposed on the show. Bentley and Michelle are both paid actors. Bachelor has become more of a script than a reality show.
